Mill by Kayak Experience…
Thurne Mill is one of the most iconic mills on the Broads and certainly the most photographed, and this is your opportunity to not only visit the mill for a private tour, but also to arrive there by water in a very unique way – by kayak!
On this experience you will be start your journey at The Wind Energy Museum, the UK’s premier wind heritage site dedicated to preserving the heritage of wind power past, present & future – this place in itself is a wonder! From here you will take the short walk to the staithe where you will be met by your expert river guide and the super-stable & rudder steered kayaks that will be your transportation out to Thurne Mill.
You will then begin the short journey up the river Thurne towards the mill, passing all the wonderful riverside houses and then out into open marshland and the river lined with the iconic Norfolk reeds where there will be every opportunity for you to see/hear Marsh Harrier, Buzzard, Bearded Tits, Reed Buntings and Warblers, Avocets and perhaps Bittern, Otter, Water Voles and more!
After a little while on the river the wonder of white painted Thurne Mill will come into view – this will be where you alight from your kayak and be met by your mill guide who will then proceed to give you historical facts about the mill and show you around this amazing, working building.
Then, fresh with all this new information in your mind you’ll get back into the kayaks for a reverse paddle down the river with your guide, back to the staithe where you’ll alight and head back to the Wind Energy Museum for either a Strawberry Cream Tea or a nice warming Hot Soup and Hearty Bread roll to finish off what will be a very unique experience indeed!
